Happy Chanukah!

This year Chanukah bookends two issues of the Gazette, as the holiday started last night, and continues until our next issue comes out, on December 20.

We want to wish everyone a bright and happy Festival of Lights, a very important observance that reflects the Jewish people’s struggle for religious freedom.

Chanukah is a time for families and friends to gather and celebrate, exchange gifts, feast, pray, sing and commemorate the miracle that occurred about two millennia ago, when the Maccabean Jews, who were freedom fighters, regained control of Jerusalem and rededicated their Temple. Miraculously their candles stayed lit for eight days with only one day’s worth of oil.

Here in Queens, those who observe the holiday will be celebrating, with ceremonial lighting of menorahs, gifts of Chanukah gelt to the children, playing dreidel, and delighting in delicacies like latkes, rugelach, blintzes, apple fritters and sufganiyot – strawberry jam-filled doughnuts.

We want wish all who celebrate the holiday a warm, happy and healthy Chanukah!
