Sen. Peralta Pushes Back Against Trump’s ‘Inhumane Policies’

NYS Senator Jose Peralta has summarized his efforts to counter several Trump administration plans.

The Tax Plan

“President Trump seems determined to hurt the hard-working middle class of this country. His latest attacks come in the form of a tax plan which will be devastating for middle-class New Yorkers. Trump’s mission is to benefit the rich, but my mission is to fight his inhumane policies. The GOP tax plan is a stab in the back to all Americans since, among many other regressions, it cuts local and state deductions affecting families making less than $200,000 a year,” noted Sen. Peralta.

TPS Ends For Haitian Immigrants

Peralta said “It is inconceivable” that the Trump Administration announced the end of the temporary protected status (TPS) to approximately 60,000 Haitians, giving them 18 months to leave the country. Haiti is not ready to take them back, as the country is still reconstructing after the massive 2010 earthquake that struck the nation, killing more than 200,000 people and displacing over 1.5 million.

Senator Peralta’s Human And Civil Rights Task Force

“With Donald Trump in the White House and Republicans dominating Congress, the new political landscape is plagued by un-American and anti-immigrant policies,” Peralta said, adding “We are on the frontline fighting Trump and we will not let Washington threaten our way of life, taking us backwards.” He invites the public to join the task force.

In New York State, Senator Peralta is pushing back and has protected New York’s immigrant community. Peralta was able to secure $10 million for a legal defense fund to protect immigrants against Trump’s “virulent and draconian immigration policies.” If you need assistance, call the Independent Democratic Conference’s toll-free emergency hotline for legal services at 800-213-6385. He noted this is the largest legal aid fund in state history.

“We must continue to fight back (against) Trump and reverse his ruthless policies. We strongly continue to push to pass my DREAM Act in the New York State Senate. We stand together to protect our DREAMers and immigrant communities. Simply put, we fight for the dignity of all New Yorkers.” Some of Peralta’s priorities for the next legislative session will include efforts to push the Liberty Act, which will provide additional safeguards for undocumented New Yorkers and ensuring that immigrants, regardless of immigration status, have the possibility to obtain a driver’s license.

Peralta asserted, “We are not returning to the shadows,” adding he wants to ensure immigrant New Yorkers have the opportunities his parents had when they left the Dominican Republic and settled in New York. “Let’s stand against racism, sexism, hatred and discrimination.” Peralta invites the public to call his district office to join his Human Rights and Civil Rights Task Force.
