NYPD Long Guns At Yankee, Met Games

By Liz Goff
Specially trained NYPD officers armed with high-powered rifles will be a familiar site next summer at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, according to police officials.

More than a dozen officers from local precincts will patrol the two stadiums during all games, concerts and other events as a precautionary measure to prevent potential terror attacks, NYPD officials said.

Officers assigned to the new NYPD Stadium Anti-Terror Task Force recently underwent two-weeks of training, along with an instructional session to familiarize them with the semiautomatic Colt M4 Commando rifles they will carry while on duty at the events.

Cop assigned to the new Task Force will wear clearly marked helmets, vests, headsets, gun slings and tactical uniforms and will be familiarized with the venues, inside and out, so they are better prepared to respond to a possible attack, NYPD officials said. The Task Force cops will police every event at the city’s major stadiums and arenas, including Madison Square Garden and Barclay’s Center, a police spokesperson said.

Members of the NYPD’s elite Emergency Service Unit, Critical Response Command and Strategic Response Group, who are armed with M4 rifles, previously policed the venues.

Police Commissioner James O’Neill called for the increased security after a suicide bomber killed 22 people during a May 22 concert at England’s Manchester Arena.

Plans for the new task force were revealed less than two weeks after an ISIS inspired terrorist used a rented pickup truck to kill eight people and injure 11 others during a hate-filled rampage in downtown Manhattan.
