Risi Inducted As Judge Of NYS Court Of Claims

Photos Tony Barsamian On Thursday, November 9, long-time community activist and respected lawyer, Joseph Risi, was inducted as Judge of the Court of Claims of the State of New York. Over 250 people packed the Garden City Country Club on Stewart Avenue in Garden City to celebrate Risi’s swearing-in. As seen in the photo, Risi was surrounded by his wife, Karen Risi and their children Joseph Risi III from Boulder, Colorado; Christopher Risi from San Francisco; and Kathryn Risi, who lives in New York City. Judge Risi thanked all the attendees, including his family, friends and colleagues at the celebration. He was sworn in by Hon. Seymour Boyers, the former Presiding Justice of Appellate Division, Second Department. Risi was nominated by Governor Cuomo and confirmed by the NYS Senate to the NYS Court of Claims. He was assigned by Chief Judge Lawrence Marks as Acting Supreme Court Justice Civil Term, Jamaica, New York. The speakers includ- ed Scott Kaufman, Esq., Frank Livoti, Esq. (President of the Garden City Country Club), Gregory Newman (President of the Queens County Bar Association), Howard Mills (former Superintendant of the NYS Insurance Dept.), and Justice Jeffrey Lebowitz.

Risi said, “It is an honor to be nominated by Governor Cuomo to the Court of Claims and to be presiding in my hometown of Queens with so many of my new colleagues, most whom I have known and respected for so many years.

“I’m always grateful to the wonderful people of Astoria for allowing me the privilege of serving for the past 27 years on Community Board 1.

As a tribute to his father, the late Justice Joseph J. Risi, who was a judge for many years in Queens County, Risi wore his father’s judicial robes during the swearing-in ceremony.
