Ziki Bar

Ziki Bar is a sliver of a space just near the edge of Astoria Park on Ditmars Blvd. This absolutely charming bar and café packs a lot of delicious food, fabulous cocktails, and lovely ambience into its petite location. Ziki Bar opened in March by the adorable, charming owner Zsolt Csonka who is originally from Hungary. Zsolt (or “George” as many call him) holds a culinary degree, has lived in Hawaii, and has called Astoria ‘home’ for many years. He brings his experience and love of the tropics to Ziki Bar, named for a “Tiki” Bar with his eponymous “Z”. The soothing décor includes terra cotta walls, pineapples, plants, antiques, and candles that emit a warm, sultry glow which is the perfect backdrop to his light, healthy menu items.

From the Ziki Bar, Zsolt mixes up some impressive cocktails such as the Aku Aku made with spiced rum, pineapple and lime juices, and fresh mint, and the Painkiller with rum, cream of coconut, and fruit juices. He makes a fantastic mojito, with or without fresh mango or lingonberry puree, and his passionfruit Caipirnha is so refreshing.

Zsolt shops daily for fresh herbs like mint and basil, and fine ingredients including locally sourced produce, Italian prosciutto and Asiago cheese, and bread from Rose and Joe’s bakery down the street. You can taste the freshness in all his dishes with praise for his flatbreads topped with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil, or George’s flatbread with prosciutto, Asiago cheese, arugula, and fine truffle oil. These flatbreads make a perfect lunch or light meal for one, or shared along with your cocktails. The freshly baked quiche of the day was light and flavorful, filled with asparagus tips, mushrooms and herbs. The crust was flaky and delicate too and it came with a side salad.

Build your panini with a choice of ham, turkey, chorizo, or vegetables, assembled on a semolina baguette with house salad and homemade dressing ($10). Avocado smash is a smash hit, mashed with cold-pressed olive oil, sea salt, black pepper and fresh lime juice. Spread it on warm bread or just eat it with a fork, it’s so delicious and healthy. Build your own salad with four ingredients of greens and vegetables for just $10.

The “All Day” Menu at Ziki Bar means that you can order breakfast or brunch items all day. The egg station offers three eggs any way you like, with your choice of a protein (ham, turkey, bacon, or chorizo), cheese, or greens folded in. French toast is made to order, drizzled with organic maple syrup and fresh blueberries ($7). House made croissants are perfect for slathering with jam and dunking into steaming hot coffee or cappuccino. There are even chocolate croissants and other breakfast pastries to enjoy in the cozy dining room, or packed up to go on your way to the train. Ziki Bar makes fresh fruit smoothies and you’ll see lots of runners coming from Astoria Park to re-fuel on healthy fare after a run. Moms and dads stroll on over with kids in tow for a delicious breakfast or brunch. Speaking of brunch, you can enjoy it with or without brunch cocktails, and there’s a one-hour Bottomless Brunch option for just $25.

Ziki Bar is already creating a strong sense of community in Western Astoria with Tuesday night “Open mic” night, where the many talented local musicians can jam and showcase their music. Wednesday night is “Ladies’ Night” with half price drinks from 5-9pm and Thursday is “Singles Mingle” night where a clever matching game is played.

Ziki Bar is open six days a week (closed Monday) from 10am to 10pm or later. Stop in anytime for a smoothie, a cup of coffee and a slice of Zsolt’s perfect apple pie, lunch, brunch, or dinner. The overall message of Ziki Bar is simple menu, good, healthy food, relaxed vibe….just what we all need in these unsettled times. A visit to Ziki Bar will fill your belly and your soul with goodness.
