Meng Announces Construction Of Elevators, More At Flushing-Main Street LIRR Station

Construction at the Flushing-Main Street LIRR station.Construction at the Flushing-Main Street LIRR station.U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) announced that the Long Island Rail Road has begun the construction of elevators at the Flushing-Main Street LIRR station.

The elevators, which will make the Flushing-Main Street station ADA accessible, are a major component of the facility’s $24.6 million overhaul.

Last month, crews completed the erection of the steel structure that will house the westbound elevator, and this week construction will begin on the eastbound elevator tower. Parts for both elevators will be installed in the coming weeks.

Construction of the new ticket office in the station’s westbound plaza is underway as well. Other upgrades such as platform lighting, electrical/communications lines, and structural enhancements are also being made to accommodate new stairs and platform extensions.

“Plans to rehabilitate the Flushing-Main Street LIRR station have been in the works for many years and it’s something for which I’ve long advocated,” said Meng. “I am thrilled that construction is finally underway and that swift progress is being made. I thank the LIRR for its continued commitment to the renovation of the Flushing-Main Street station and I look forward to the project’s completion.”

Completion of the station overhaul is presently set for early 2018. Last year, Meng unveiled new signage and platform railings which were the first phase of the station’s renovations.
