New Electric Transmission Line To Be Installed In Northwest Queens

Con Edison is installing a new underground electric transmission cable from Long Island City to Corona to help support long-term service reliability for residents and businesses in the growing borough.

The project calls for construction work through 2019 in segments along a six-mile route that winds through Long Island City, Astoria, Woodside, Jackson Heights and Corona. The transmission line will be installed along local streets, resulting in the temporary disruption of parking spaces along one or more blocks at a time while the work is going on. The company will work with the city Department of Transportation to minimize traffic congestion in the affected areas.

Con Edison will also be upgrading natural gas piping during the excavations for the electrical transmission work.

The new transmission line will provide an essential link from a substation near the Ed Koch/59th Street Bridge to a substation in Corona, allowing Con Edison to maintain safe, reliable service to businesses and residents. The project is expected to bring an additional 240 megawatts of power – enough to supply electricity to 240,000 homes.
