No Love For Astoria Man At Tennis Tourney

An Astoria man who was banned from the U.S. Open tennis tournament in August 2016 was arrested on 1 after he was spotted trying to sneak into the championship matches at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park (FMCP,) a police source said.

Ranier Piirmiets, 35, was caught when he tried to get into the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at FMCP, violating the ban issued last year, the source said.

USTA officials banished the Astoria resident from future U.S. Open tournaments during the 2016 championships after investigators determined he was connected to an overseas betting ring, the police source said.

Piirimets was charged with harassment and trespassing at his arraignment at Queens Criminal Court.
