Briarwood/Kew Gardens Lions Club Cleans Up Queens Blvd Plazas

On Labor Day Monday, September 4, members of the Briarwood/Kew Gardens (BKG) Lions Club organized an impromptu, emergency Community Cleanup of the two plazas recently constructed along the north side of Queens Boulevard in Briarwood. Armed with trash bags, recycling bags, masks, gloves, trash pickers, and environmentally safe cleansers purchased by the BKG Lions, club members went to work.

After initially being pleased with the installation of the plazas (two on the north side and one on the south side of Queens Boulevard over the Van Wyck Expressway), following the completion of road work in Briarwood by the NYS Department of Transportation, local residents were soon dismayed to realize that there was a persistent lack of regular cleanup of the sites. The plazas became unsightly messes with overflowing garbage cans, food scraps and other litter strewn throughout the plazas.

After weeks of requests sent to various city agencies and elected officials for maintenance of the three Plazas, accompanied by photos, the Briarwood/Kew Gardens Lions tired of waiting and sprung into action. You can see photos of the event on the Briarwood/Kew Gardens Lions Club Facebook page.
