Discover the Rhythms Of Puerto Rico Under The Full Moon At Flushing Town Hall

Flushing Town Hall is hosting a Puerto Rican drumming workshop in the garden, under the full moon, to celebrate the beginning of both the autumn season and Hispanic Heritage Month. On Wednesday, September 13, professional drummers from Puerto Rico will teach participants how to use traditional Puerto Rican instruments and later lead a drum circle in the garden.

The workshop will be led by Juan Gutierrez, a professional percussionist and GRAMMY-nominated Founding Director of Los Pleneros de la 21, and an NEA Heritage Fellow. He was also named Musical Director of BomPlenazo 2014, a biennial celebration of Afro-Puerto Rican music and dance.
For the first half of the workshop, Gutierrez will introduce participants to the rhythms and percussive instruments of Puerto Rico’s bomba and plena, including the pandereta, barriles, guiro, cua, and maracas. Everyone will have the opportunity to learn how to use all of these traditional Puerto Rican instruments and later, create their own rhythms under the full moon with the drum circle. All are welcome to attend, beginners or professionals, just bring excitement and enthusiasm!
The event starts at 7 pm and will end at around 9 pm. Tickets are on sale for $25/$20 for members. Space is limited to 20 people, so please call (718) 463-7700 x222 to reserve your drum. Visit www.flushingtownhall.org for more information.
Flushing Town Hall is accessible by car, bus, train and foot – located a short distance from the 7 train – at 137-35 Northern Blvd., in Flushing, Queens.
