Call For Panel To Locate Shelters

A Manhattan city councilmember last week introduced a bill to create an independent commission to decide the location of homeless shelters.
Councilmember David Greenfield introduced a measure on August 24 to create a 15-member commission composed of five mayoral appointees, five from the City Council Speaker and one by each of the five borough presidents to “take politics out of locating homeless shelters.”
Mayor Bill deBlasio, who has sole power to decide the location of homeless shelters, has come under fire by lawmakers and angry residents for his decisions to open new homeless sites in neighborhoods with several existing shelters.
