Annual Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival

One of the most exciting natural spectacles that you can see from Jamaica Bay is the annual shorebird migration. Having left their breeding grounds in the arctic, many shorebirds are on a journey to warmer climes in Central and South America. That Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is one of their favorite stops along the way! People learned all about these incredible animals at the annual Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival which took place on August 26. It was a day of indoor and outdoor programs, where people learned about shorebird behavior, biology, photography, and how to identify them by local experts. Also included were kids’ programs and walks by NPS Rangers. This was a partnership program between Gateway NRA, NYC Audubon, and the American Littoral Society.
