Over 100 East Elmhurst and Corona women went to an event held at the Silver Spoon Diner near LeFrak City to show their support for Hiram Monserrate’s campaign for the 21st City Council District seat.

Over 100 East Elmhurst and Corona women went to an event held at the Silver Spoon Diner near LeFrak City to show their support for Hiram Monserrate’s campaign for the 21st City Council District seat. At an outdoor breakfast event held at the Silver Spoon Diner near LeFrak City, over 100 women who reside in East Elmhurst and Corona came to show their overwhelming support for Hiram Monserrate’s campaign for the 21st City Council District seat.
Ileana Martinez explained, “This isn’t about politics and this isn’t about someone’s past. This event is about our community. And in this city council race, the only candidate who can help make a difference is Hiram. Our streets are dirty and unsafe. Local businesses are leaving the community. Even our neighbors can’t afford to stay here because the rents are too high. We need help. We need Hiram!”
The gathering was titled the Community Women for Hiram Monserrate Breakfast, and was organized by a local grassroots movement of concerned women who are dissatisfied with the current officials representing their community.
“Hiram has always fought for the underdog, and that’s one of the reasons I’m supporting him,” said one of the event organizers, Ruby Muhammad.  “Hiram is the only political leader who is fighting to keep our voting machines at Lefrak City.  Everyone else has done nothing.”
Another event organizer, Malika Shabazz, said “Yesterday is in the past. The community supports Hiram because we look at his professional record. Hiram listens. Hiram works hard for you, and Hiram delivers. He’s our choice.”
According to organizers’ statement, during his time in the City Council, Monserrate secured funding for breast cancer support groups, a mobile mammography unit for Elmhurst Hospital Center, and was the standard-bearer for making the streets in the community safer by bringing more resources to the local police precincts.
The event organizers invited Monserrate’s wife, Michelle Monserrate, to speak. She said, “Hiram really cares about people. And helping people in his community is his true motivation. He fights for those who can't fight. He lends his voice to those with no voice.”
The event closed with a special announcement made by Mrs. Monserrate, “Life is all about new beginnings. Hiram is now my husband and yes, we are expecting a baby soon!  And we plan to raise our baby right here in this community.”
