For the 17th year, the annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Concert had Sunnysiders swinging! On August 3, Paul Maringelli and the Sunnyside Wolverines headlined the beloved annual event in Bliss Plaza as part of Sunnyside Shines’ Summer Thursdays series.

This year’s event kicked off with face-painting and temporary henna tattoos against a soundtrack of 1920s jazz standards. Astoria Swing Dance warmed up the crowd with a red hot performance and mini lesson, while Bliss Street Creamery kept it cool with free scoops of a few of their signature flavors, including a special commemorative flavor dubbed “Bix Licks.”

The Sunnyside Wolverines, named for Bix’s first band, entertained the crowd through the early evening in a performance of period jazz to honor the memory of Bix, one of jazz’s great early soloists who passed away at the age of only 28 in 1931 at his home in Sunnyside.

The Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Concert was hosted by Sunnyside Shines, as part of its Astoria Swing Dance.

Dance and martial arts performances have included karate and capoeira demonstrations and dance performances from classical ballet, Colombian salsa, and Mexican, Ecuadorean, and Paraguayan folk dance groups. The series will continue through September 7; the full schedule of performances is available on Sunnyside Shines’ website and Facebook page.
