Beware ‘False Alarm’ Car Repair Scammers
Cops said the men pull up next to a vehicle stopped at a traffic light and tell the driver his or her car is ob fire, or that heavy smoke is pouring from underneath the vehicle.
Another man suddenly appears and tells the motorist to open the car hood, “So he can take a look to see what’s going on,” police said.
The second man reappears from under the hood and tells the driver, “I’m your guardian angel. I can fix the problem right now,” police said.
“Some terrified motorists have forked over a lot of cash to these guys, to pay for the instant repair,” police said. “But the whole thing is a scam. There is nothing wrong with the car to begin with, so people are paying for nothing.”
Victims are urged to call the Community Affairs Office or Crime Prevention Office at their local precinct to file a complaint, or for more information on the false alarm scammers, police said.
