New Grand Buffet

If you have a family where everyone wants something different for dinner, you ought to visit New Grand Buffet, where there is literally something for everyone. Don’t even bother to cook on these steamy summer nights when you can cool off at New Grand Buffet and enjoy the largest variety of freshly prepared foods from all over the world.

New Grand Buffet is so popular that there are plans under way to expand to the space next door, in the shopping center just off Northern Blvd, at 48th Street, led by the same great management. In fact, after a day of shopping, a great meal at New Grand Buffet is just the ticket. And at such low prices, the whole family can dine together on long, communal tables, or enjoy a quiet meal as a couple at a table for two.

With over 100 distinct dishes to choose among, I like to walk around the buffet tables first to hone in on my favorites. The raw bar and sushi bar is a great place to start with fresh sushi and sashimi, and clams on the half shell placed on ice. Next, the cold salad bar is full of fresh greens, vegetables, bean salad, tuna salad and pasta salad. Next, you’ll find Chinese style dishes such as dumplings and dim sum presented in bamboo baskets, filled with seasoned pork, shrimp and vegetables with dipping sauce on the side. There are crispy spring rolls, egg rolls, baby back ribs, roast pork and chicken wings that the whole family digs into. Lo mein and fried rice make great sides for the General Tso’s chicken, stir fried vegetables or beef and broccoli. New Grand Buffet specializes in fresh seafood, with an eye dazzling array of fresh fish and seafood. Tender, flaky fish fillets are steamed with herbs or fried to a crispy finish. Plump, juicy shrimp are prepared in a variety of ways, such as coconut shrimp with a creamy sauce, or stuffed shrimp filled with a savory mix of bread crumbs and crabmeat. Salt and pepper shrimp are addictively crunchy and savory; just eat the shell and all, while the fried shrimp offer cocktail dipping sauce on the side. Lots of loyal diners come for the amazing king crab legs, steamed or fried, they’re a house favorite. A new dish on offer is the seafood boil, a Louisiana style mélange of shrimp, clams and fish in a savory broth, just perfect with some rice, mashed potatoes, or corn on the cob. Mussels are steamed in garlic sauce or stuffed and baked. Tender clams are on the menu as are fried calamari.

There’s an international aisle of dishes that includes chicken tacos, Italian sausage, roasted pork, plantains and more. I was impressed with the whole roast beef that you can carve yourself. It was perfectly cooked with a pink center, and you can help yourself to as much as you like. The “kid friendly” menu features chicken fingers, hot dogs, pizza, French fries, and more.

Don’t forget the dessert bar, where there’s plenty of fresh fruit, tempting cakes, puddings and cookies available. There’s creamy cheesecake, carrot cake, brownies, butterfly flaky cookies, and assorted pastries.

Banana pudding brought back memories and the flan with caramel sauce was cool, creamy and delicious. Children and adults alike love the soft serve vanilla and chocolate ice cream machine with cones for filling.

The simple “pay one price” of $15.99 for dinner and $8.99 for lunch from Monday to Thursday works so well for families on a budget. Add one dollar to the price for weekend dining and it’s still a great value, considering the delicious variety of food. Soft drinks, beer and wine are extra, but very reasonably priced.

Host your next private party or corporate event at New Grand Buffet where luncheons and dinners, birthday parties or other family events are easily arranged with no fuss on your part. Parking and public transportation are both easy. New Grand Buffet is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner from 11am to 10pm. They have a reasonably priced carry out menu as well.
