Driver Dies, Passenger Critical In LIC Crash

By Liz Goff
A 28-year-old Woodside man died and his 17-year-old female passenger was critically injured when his car slammed into an 18-wheeler early Saturday, June 24.

Cops said Steven Narvaez was heading west on Skillman Avenue in his white, 2013 Toyota Corolla at about 6 a.m. on June 24, when he blew through a red light at the Queens Boulevard intersection in Long Island City.

The Toyota struck an 18-wheel municipal waste truck that was traveling with a green light at the intersection, police said. Cops responding to the scene found the mangled remains of the Toyota wedged underneath the trailer portion of the truck, with its roof seared off.

Narvaez was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters pulled him from the wreck, police said. The unidentified woman was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he was listed in critical condition.

The truck driver remained at the scene and was not immediately charged in the accident.

Police said the crash remains under investigation.
