Nearly 200 attendees turned out to honor the Flag of the United States of America.

Forest Hills Gardens Corp. (FHGC) Vice President and Master of Ceremonies Tony Barsamian kicked off the event by introducing guests Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi, who gave stirring speeches, and Mitchell Cohen, FHGC President, who helped coordinate the proceedings.

There was a special “visit” by President Teddy Roosevelt, in honor of the 100th anniversary celebration of his famous speech given at Station Square in Forest Hills on July 4, 1917. (Special thanks to Rob Schnell for channeling Pres. Roosevelt and Bob Kline for allowing the use of his painting in the program.)

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz then led the gathering in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Rev. Steven Moore of the Church-In-The-Gardens, who gave an invocation. Katz again took to the mic to perform a rousing rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.”

The Garden Players, led by Artistic Director Betina Hershey, performed songs from “Your Turn,” a superhero musical, and a medley of patriotic songs before the enthusiastic crowd.
