Questions Remain In Ridgewood Woman’s Death

By Liz Goff
Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy by the city Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death of an 80-year-old Ridgewood woman, who was found dead inside her home on June 8.

Cops said Ganina Olzewska’s son Irek discovered her body in the bedroom of her apartment on Madison Street near Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood at about 8:45 a.m. on June 8.

Olzewska was naked from the waist down and her body showed visible signs of trauma when police arrived at the scene, a law enforcement source said. Police are waiting for the autopsy results to determine if she suffered the bruises and other signs of trauma during a prior assault by her boyfriend.

The boyfriend, Marek Piotrkowicz, 56, was previously arrested for allegedly assaulting Olzewska during a heated dispute at the apartment on June 3, police said. Cops said the dispute turned violent when Piotrkowicz followed Olzewska into her bedroom and assaulted her, leaving bruising and minor cuts on her forehead and bruises on other parts of her body.

Irek Olzewska told police he provided 24-hour care for his elderly mother. The son said he stepped out of the apartment for about 10 minutes on June 3, during which time the alleged beating took place. Olzewska said he called police when he saw his mother’s injuries. Piotrkowicz was taken into custody a short while later.

Piotrkowicz was charged with assault and endangering an adult at his arraignment at Queens Criminal Court, where Judge John Zoll denied the prosecutor’s request for $5,000 bail and ordered his release.

Piotrkowicz has a history of several prior arrests, each of which was sealed by the court, a law enforcement source said.

Neighbors reported hearing loud disputes coming from inside the apartment. - arguments between the mother and son. At least one of those disputer put Olzewska in the hospital last year, authorities said.

Accounts by several neighbors who said Olzewska was a heavy drinker could not be confirmed.

Irek Olzewska and Piotrkowicz were both questioned last week by detectives at the Queens North Homicide Squad, authorities said. As of June 11, neither of the two men had been named a possible suspect in the elderly woman’s death.
