Monserrate Joins With Three Gold Star Mothers In Honoring The Fallen

On Memorial Day May 29, 2017, the East Elmhurst Corona Alliance joined with former Councilman Hiram Monserrate and Three Gold Star Mothers: Maria Duran, mother of Alex Jimenez: Gladys Ciro mother of Marlon Bustamante and Martha Clark mother of Jonathan Rivadeneira to honor four of our local Fallen Heroes.  The group held a Wreath Laying Ceremony accompanied by the NY Youth Military Cadets who presented arms and played TAPS.

The event began at 10 AM at the corner of 104th Street and 37th Drive in Corona, Queens.   A ceremony was held and the first wreath was laid at the corner of Alex Jimenez Way.  The group then proceeded to lay wreaths on all the corners dedicated to Juan Gomez, Marlon Bustamante and Jonathan Rivadeneira.

During his tenure as Council member Hiram Monserrate introduced legislation to rename four corners, three corners in Corona and one in Jackson Heights in honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.  Monserrate stated, “There are two powerful messages about today’s event.  While many in the community enjoy the BBQ’s and festivities of the holiday we will never forget our local hometown heroes.  The men and women that gave their all in the service of this nation desserve our continual respect and we must honor them.  Secondly, to those who rail against the immigrant community we must note that two of our local heroes were immigrants and the other two were the sons of immigrants.  Our community has shed blood for this nation and we must never forget that either”.

One of the Goldstar mothers Maria Duran stated, I want to thank everyone for remembering my son Alex.  It has now been 10 years since he was killed.  The pain is still very heavy.  I appreciate all that attended today and on behalf of the Gold Star mothers we would ask that you never forget our sons and their sacrifice.  Never forget the brave men and women who died serving our country.  I also want to give a heartfelt thank you to Hiram Monserrate who was with my family during the whole ordeal and stood with us through it all.  Thanks to him this corner where Alex lived will always have his name.  I know I speak for all the Gold Star Mothers, Thank you All.”

Alirio Orduna added, “I salute all our servicemembers who gave the ultimate sacrifice. I have stood here with the NY Military Youth Cadets for each one of these street re-namings and pledge to be here every year remembering our fallen Heroes.”

Talea Wufka of the East Elmhurst Corona Alliance closed by saying. “It is an honor to memorialize our home town heroes, God Bless our community.
