CB2 Announces Passing Of Gert McDonald

Community Board 2 District Manager Debbie Markell Kleinert and Chairwoman Denise Keehan Smith announced the passing of Gertrude McDonald:

“It is with great sadness that CB 2 regrets to inform you of the passing of Gert McDonald. Gert was 100 years young, she was so on target with so many things. She would have turned 101 years old in August. Some of you know her as Eileen Auld’s mom.

“Gert was a super terrific lady, she was an icon, community leader, friend, mentor and mom to so many people. She was such a wonderful, caring person. Everyone has a ‘Gert story.’ She will be greatly missed as there is a large empty hole in Queens.

“Our deepest condolences go out to her family and friends”

The updated funeral arrangements for Gert McDonald have been announced as follow:

Visiting hours will be held at Lynch Funeral Home, at Queens Blvd. and 43rd Street, on Wednesday May 24 and Thursday, May 25, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on both days.

The Funeral Mass will held on Friday, May 26 at St. Theresa’s Church, located at 50-20 45th Street in Woodside at 10:30 a.m.

"McDonald was a wonderful, community-minded person who cared about making our neighborhoods of Sunnyside and western Queens a better place,” said Assemblywoman Nolan.  “As a long-time Queens Community Board 2 member, Sunnyside resident and civic leader, Gert was the first woman in Queens County to run for elective office in 1968.  She paved the way for many woman elected officials like myself to be more active in government.  For these accomplishments and many more, she will be truly missed.”
