There will be additional rain barrel events in the future. Recently, New York State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato were joined by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to help give away rain barrels at American Legion Post 1404, at 209 Cross Bay Blvd., in Broad Channel.

Rain barrels are designed to help catch excess rain water, which can later be reused for simple household tasks, such as watering the plants or washing the car.

“Not only does this program go a long way to help preserve water, but it will save homeowners money in the long run by not having to pay for water to carry out everyday chores,” said Addabbo, a member of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee. “I’d like to extend my thanks to Karen Ellis and the DEP for providing us with rain barrels for district residents, and the American Legion for being such gracious hosts.”

“A city office came together with neighbors and local elected officials, we all got a little sun, and we helped over 100 people save money on their water bills. Not a bad Sunday,” Pheffer Amato said. ”We’re excited to do many more events like these, where we get to help our neighbors help themselves and connect them with some of the unexpected, super-helpful services that our city has to offer.”

Addabbo is planning to host additional rain barrel events around his district throughout the next month, including one with Pheffer Amato on June 10 at the New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC) building, located at 164-14 Cross Bay Blvd. in Howard Beach; and another with Assemblyman Mike Miller at the Glendale Yeshiva, 74-10 88th Street in Glendale. Both events will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

To register for a free rain barrel, call Senator Addabbo’s Howard Beach Office at 718-738-1111.
