Village Grill

As the name suggests, Village Grill is your neighborhood eatery where Chef Dina cooks it better than you ever could, so why would you?

Do what other residents of this leafy section of Forest Hills do and stop in at this quaint, corner café on Yellowstone Blvd. and Ingram St. Or simply call and have your lunch or dinner delivered to your home or office.

Village Grill offers casual Greek and American dishes at honest prices. Dina makes nearly everything from scratch on the premises, and by now her desserts are legendary. I don’t usually start by talking about dessert, but I’ll make an exception here to let you know that Dina’s chocolate mousse is as good as what I’ve had in Paris. The rice pudding is prepared from scratch and is cool and creamy, dusted with cinnamon. Greek specialty sweets include baklava, galaktoboreko flaky pastry with custard, almond cookies dusted with powdered sugar called kourabie, and sweet coconut cake. These confections are so good that we saw diners come in just for dessert and coffee, and to take home containers of rice pudding.

On a cool spring evening, my Aunt and I came for dinner and started with a nice Greek salad tossed with greens, cucumbers, green peppers, and olives, topped with slabs of creamy feta cheese, perfect for sharing. A Caesar salad or chef salad with cubes of ham and Swiss cheese and hard boiled egg makes a nice lunch or dinner, especially when topped with grilled chicken or sliced gyro. There’s flaky spinach pie and cheese pie too, all homemade, as well as Greek lemon chicken soup or lentil soup to start your meal. Kids love the mozzarella sticks and wing dings, and the fried meatballs are addictive and great for sharing with six to an order ($7.00).

For dinner or lunch, Village Grill’s chicken souvlaki is one of their most popular dishes, made with marinated chicken breast laced on skewers and served with a small Greek salad, pita and Village Grill sauce or tzatziki. A side dish of rice, potatoes, or freshly grilled vegetables comes with it too, making this a great deal at just $14. The combination platter with both beef cubes and slices of gyro with all the trimmings. Greek Loukaniko sausage is mildly seasoned and served on a platter or in a sandwich. My companion loved the gyro sandwich, filled with juicy sliced beef and pork gyro, salad, red onion, and sauce. In fact, all of the grilled meats and crunchy falafel are available as a platter or piled into a pita with salad and your choice of sauce for about $7. These sandwiches are perfect at lunch time or for dinner.

Due to its popularity, the Bolognese sauce over pasta is now available every day. I love the herbs and mild spices in this rich, meaty sauce, poured over your choice of pasta. Lamb chops, barbecued half chicken, or whole rotisserie chicken is also available, and makes for a great ‘take home’ dinner after work. Village Grill burgers are a two-napkin affair, with kudos for Dina’s own lamb burger, made in house with fine ground lamb, a host of fragrant, mild herbs, and topped with feta cheese, tomato, red onion and tzatziki, and served on a fluffy brioche bun ($14.99). Classic hamburgers, turkey burgers and veggie burgers do the trick at under $6. Wraps are very popular here and cost around $8. One of the most popular is the Santorini fish wrap with fried codfish, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and Village Grill sauce. You’ll need two hands for the chicken wrap filled with grilled chicken, roasted peppers, fresh mozzarella and balsamic glaze. The Mediterranean wrap features beef gyro, lettuce, tomatoes, green pepper, feta cheese, olive oil and vinegar dressing. The veggie wrap has grilled mushrooms, zucchini, and roasted red peppers wrapped up into a soft tortilla. Add some crispy, golden French fries for just $3 more.

Village Grill is open from 10am to 10pm six days a week, with a day off on Tuesday. Let Village Grill cater your next business lunch or family event. Call in your order or better yet, stroll on over to Yellowstone Blvd, or drive, as the street parking is easy here. For casual Greek and American lunch and dinner and delicious Desserts, you’ll love Village Grill.
