Transit Cops Hunt Subway Slugger

City Transit police are searching for a straphanger who attacked a subway conductor on a No. 7 train on May 2, after he asked the man to stop smoking on the Queens-bound train.

Cops said the 50-year-old subway conductor was walking through the train at about 5:45 a.m. on May 2 when he spotted the man, who is in his 20s, smoking and asked him to put out the cigarette.

The straphanger went into a rage, punching and spitting at the conductor, police said.

The suspect ran from the train as it pulled into the Hunters Point station in Long Island City and fled to the street.

The conductor was not seriously injured in the attack, a fire spokesperson said.
