New, Harsh Penalties For Illegal Conversions

Landlords and property owners that illegally convert hones into three or more units above what is permitted by law will now face new enforcement and stiff penalties under a measure passed recently by the City Council.

Under the new law landlords who are found in violation of the new law would face a $15,000 fine for each unit converted beyond what is listed on the certificate of occupancy.

The measure also gives the city Department of Buildings (DOB) and the Environmental Control Board (EDB) the authority to obtain a warrant to inspect properties suspected of having an illegal conversion and to impose fines allowable under the law.

The City Council voted unanimously to approve the new legislation, Intro 1218, following years of illegal conversions by landlords who put the loves and safety of tenants in illegal units at risk.
