Riverview Restaurant and Lounge

One of the top restaurants of Western Queens and by far, the crown jewel of Long Island City, is Riverview Restaurant located on the waterfront, just across the street from the sprawling Gantry State Park with its breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. In warm weather you can dine outdoors, taking in the spectacular views, or dine inside in the recently redecorated restaurant with well-dressed tables, lovely art work, and rich banquettes. Sip on a classic Riverview cocktail made with infused vodka, pear juice, cucumber and basil or a classic martini, or a glass of sparkling Prosecco. Even the lounge has been re-decorated and offers a soothing Happy Hour to meet with friends while you admire the view and watch the pink and magenta sky cast a stunning backdrop behind the world’s greatest skyline.

Don’t wait for a weekend or a special occasion to visit Riverview. Tony Raouf, your charming host, greets his guests warmly and guides them to a comfortable table or banquette in the exquisite dining room. After sipping on some fine wine, we were presented with a platter of golden, pan-seared scallops, surrounded by creamy pureed cauliflower and drizzled with tangerine syrup. These fresh, tender scallops were sublime, as was the crab cake, golden and crisp on the outside and full of sweet crabmeat and mild seasonings on a bed of mixed baby greens ($16). We also shared a plate of beef carpaccio, paper thin slices of raw filet mignon, topped with capers, arugula, shaved Parmigiano, and lemon vinaigrette. Juicy mussels are prepared ‘mariniere’ style with shallots, garlic, white wine, and parsley sauce or “Provencal” style with tomatoes, basil, garlic and Pernod, with juices dying to be soaked up with the warm bread brought to your table.

Share a bright salad of roasted beets with goat cheese and honey, or a decadent seafood salad composed of grilled lobster, grilled shrimp, arugula, oranges, avocado, apple slices and light dressing ($18). A hunk of creamy burrata cheese is garnished with multi-colored tomatoes, fine olive oil and balsamic glaze, ideal for sharing as well.

Riverview’s range of entrees includes everything from casual, kid-friendly fare like brick oven pizza and pasta, to the haute cuisine offerings such as roasted rack of lamb, duck from the Hudson valley, and fine seafood, so there’s something for everyone. The roasted salmon is a gorgeous dish of perfectly cooked wild salmon served in a puddle of Dijon sauce, accompanied by freshly grilled asparagus and roasted beets. The halibut is also popular for its thick, flaky meat, cooked with carrots, celery, potatoes and onions, black olives and mustard cream sauce.

Riverview’s meats are top grade and cooked to order. The hangar steak is a French classic with the perfect texture, topped with shallot sauce and served with potatoes au gratin. The 10-ounce sirloin is another great choice in beef, and meat lovers will enjoy the hefty Veal chop, served with asparagus wrapped in prosciutto. “Poulet roti” is another classic French dish of free-range chicken breast served in its own juice with mashed potatoes, “haricots verts” (green beans), and carrots. For lunch, or casual dinners, try the Riverview burger or lamb burger with its special herbs and spices, and caramelized onions. Pasta lovers should try Riverview’s classic lasagna with the chef’s rich, meaty sauce, spaghetti Bolognese, lobster ravioli or linguine with fresh clams. Light, crispy, brick oven pizza is another great lunch or dinner option that kids and adults will love.

Whatever you choose, save room for dessert because the chocolate mousse is light and fluffy, the carrot cake rich and moist, and the apple streudel light and flaky. An after-dinner cordial or glass of port and a cup of coffee puts the ‘chapeau’ on this fantastic meal.
