Forest Hills History Mural Overhauls Neglected Ascan Ave Underpass

(L. to r.); Linda Perlman and Gazette Publisher Tony Barsamian. At the Ascan Avenue underpass in Forest Hills, near Austin Street, locals and commuters witnessed history when Forest Hills’ newest mural “A Tribute to Ascan Avenue & the Forest Hills Gardens,” was unveiled.

The mural will beautify a long-neglected underpass in Forest Hills, while paying homage to the influential founders of Forest Hills, historic figures Russell Sage, Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage, Ascan Backus, Grosvenor Atterbury and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr.

The mural “will also benefit our local arts, culture and education, as well as foster tourism,” said Perlman, adding, “We wish to thank all who have donated to our fundraisers to date; muralists Crisp and Praxis; fundraising partner, Marvel Comics artist John Stanisci; and restaurant hosts RoastNco, La Boulangerie and Knish Nosh.

Funds were acquired from local businesses and residents since December 2016.
