Driver Faces Lesser Charges In Fatal Baby Crash

The driver of a pickup truck that struck and killed a year-old girl in East Elmhurst on March 23 has been charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care, following an investigation by police at the NYPD Accident Investigation Squad, authorities said.

Cops said the mother was pushing the baby across 23rd Avenue at 94th Street at about 8:40 p.m. on March 23 when the Dodge Ram pickup truck struck the child’s pink stroller.

The driver was making a right turn from 94th Street when he crashed into the stroller, a police source said. “He ran right over the front of the stroller,” the source said. “The mom was screaming, trying to pull the stroller out from under the truck.” The hysterical woman shouted at the driver, “You hit my baby, you hit my baby,” the source said.

Eyewitnesses told police the pickup truck has a green light on 94th Street, and the woman was walking with a red light on 23rd Avenue at the time of the accident. The mother was talking on her phone as she crossed the street, the eyewitnesses said.

Police said the driver got out of the truck not realizing what had happened. Eyewitnesses told police the driver thought he’d hit groceries when he stepped out of the truck. “He was beside himself, crying, when he realized he had hit a child,” the police source said.

Two NYPD officers who were in the area rushed the mom and the baby to Elmhurst Hospital Center in their patrol car, a police spokesperson said.

The baby suffered severe head trauma and died a short while after she arrived at the hospital, authorities said.
