L.I. Man Charged With Queens Hate Crimes

By Liz Goff
Police charged a Long Island man with a hate crime on March 18, after he allegedly attacked two transgender victims outside a McDonald’s restaurant in Elmhurst.

Cops said Patrick O’Meara, 38, shouted anti-gay slurs at the two victims when they entered the restaurant on 82nd Street near Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights at about 4:30 p.m. on March 17.

O’Meara approached the victims inside the restaurant and tossed one of them to the ground, police said. He punched and kicked the victim, then went to the street and returned with a cane, police said.

O’Meara then went to the street and returned to the restaurant with a cane that he used to beat the second victim, who suffered a gash to the left hand, police said.
Police arrested O’Meara at his Oakdale, L.I. home several hours after the attacks and charged him with assault as a hate crime.

Police sources said O’Meara has a long criminal history, including a January 2017 arrest for stealing a vehicle in Manhattan while under the influence of alcohol.

O’Meara was held in lieu of $5,000 bail at his arraignment on March 18 in Queens Criminal Court.
