Leaders Honored At Black History Celebration

On February 27th, City Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer honored the achievements of distinguished community leaders at the 7th Annual Black History Month Celebration before a packed room at the Jacob Riis Neighborhood Settlement, in Queensbridge. The Majority Leader presented the Distinguished Public Service Award to Queens Library President and CEO Dennis Walcott, who began his career as a kindergarten teacher and has served as the Chancellor of the NYC Department of Education. Honorees: • Kim Alston (2nd VP of Queensbridge Tenants Association) • Captain Hugh Bogle (NYPD PSA 9) • Giselle Burgess (Girl Scouts of New York) • Emanuel “Malik” Campbell (Build Queensbridge 696) • Joyce “GG” Johnson (Community Leader) • Renee Johnson (Asst. Principal PS 111) • Isaiah Brown (Young Honoree, PS 111) • Deviney Jackson (Young Honoree, IS 204) Over 300 guests attended the event and enjoyed special performances by Precise Dance Studio, the IS 125 Choir, the PS 166 STARS Ballet, the Center of Hope International Choir, and DJ Hank Pollard.
