(Pedorthists are professionals that specialize in modifying footwear and employ supportive devices within the shoe to alleviate conditions that limit mobility and/or cause pain.) For 20 of those years, he independently operated his pedorthic business in Woodhaven, performing all phases of evaluation, planning, fabrication, fitting, and adjustment of footwear orthoses. He has also performed numerous types of other footwear modifications, including the custom externally wedged shoes used in earlier phases of his research. Mobility issues addressed in Mr. Esposito’s practice have stemmed from clinical conditions as diverse as osteoarthritis and cerebral palsy, hip displacements, polio, club feet, and many other foot problems. Because of his knowledge of modifying special shoes, he was able to create a new, adaptable swivel-wedge shoe. Then he removed all metal, opened the toes and through an MRI, confirmed the initial analysis of the effect of the swivel-heel wedge on the human body. This Stephen Esposito shoe was used in a study by Dr. Jeff Cole, a certified physiatrist (orthopedic doctor that uses physical therapy instead of surgery) as a prototype for a clinical study. This study will be a more effective and inexpensive way to pretreat common orthopedic problems that affect the hip, knees and the feet. Esposito will be conducting clinical trials of this newly created shoe. This orthopedic shoe will be featured in a future issue of the American Medical Journal of Medicine. It was one of 500 entries to this magazine, and was chosen out of 3 finalists. A grant was approved to Stephen R. Esposito with Dr. Jeff Cole to begin trials of these shoes. Dr. Cole and Mr. Esposito have a long-standing history of professional association, which has included the discussion of optimal interventions for patients in Dr. Cole’s care many times. The Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation is very proud of their President, Stephen R. Esposito, for his creation of this shoe, the securing of this prestigious grant, and his new consulting position. All of these achievements contribute to the ultimate aim to alleviate pain and increase mobility for those that need this assistance.
