Cops Probe Possible Astoria Hate Crime

By Liz Goff
Police are searching for an umbrella toting tough guy who assaulted a 69-year-old Astoria woman on March 1, shouting that she should be deported by the feds because she is illegal.

Cops said the woman was leaving a Key Food supermarket on 31st Street near Ditmars Boulevard at about1: 30 p.m. on March 1 when she was confronted by the man.

The man shouted at the victim, “Get the f--- out of my country. You should be deported! I should shoot you!” a police source said. “He told the woman he was going to smash her in the face and shoot her,” the source said. “She kept telling him that she belongs here, that she’s lived in Astoria for 26 years – and that she is a third generation New Yorker, but he didn’t want to hear it.”

The victim told investigators that the man “got right up in her face” and started swinging his umbrella, the source said. “She was afraid he was going to hit her in the face with the umbrella, so she raised her hand to protect herself – and the umbrella sliced one of her fingers,” the source explained. “She was horrified, shaking when she told the cops what had happened.”

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6-feet-tall, clean -shaven, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Police officials said detectives are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime, and are urging anyone with information to call the CrimeStoppers HOTLINE at 1-900-577-TIPS or click on www.nypdcrimestoppers.com
