Manhole Fire Damages Cars, Causes Power Outage

Photo by Maria Kalliagas and Tony BarsamianForest Hills was rocked by a series of manhole explosions, which left many without electricity and even damaged some parked vehicles nearby.

The manhole fire began around 11 pm Sunday, February 19th, on Queens Boulevard, near 67th Avenue. Residents reported the noise sounding like a big explosion or even sounding like a “bomb.”

The FDNY reported that no one was hurt, though it took firefighters two hours to put out the blaze.

The explosions sent debris into the air and landing on parked cars, breaking windshields and even crushing hoods and damaging headlights.
Con Ed is still working to discover the cause of the explosion.
