Freak Accident Kills Forklift Operator

A forklift driver loading cartons of auto parts in a van parked outside at an FDNY facility in Long Island City was crushed to death on February 10, police said.

Cops said Rakesh Ram, 28, a worker at Napa Auto Parts, was driving the yellow Yale forklift outside an FDNY warehouse on Review Avenue near 35th Street at about 12:35 p.m. on February 10 when he stopped to unload some cartons.

Ram pulled the forklift behind the van and put it in neutral, stepped down and walked toward the van to load the cartons, police said. As he walked between the two vehicles, the forklift suddenly lunged forward, trapping Ram between the two vehicles, police said.

Ram was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he died a short while later.

No cause has been listed for the accident, which is under investigation, authorities said.
