Apply Now For Summer Youth Jobs

By Liz Goff
There’s no time like the present for young New Yorkers to apply for summer jobs through the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is accepting applications from New Yorkers 14-to-24 years old, for six-week entry-level positions around the five boroughs.

Applications will be accepted from February 13 through March 17, DYCD officials said. The 2017 application period has been moved up to give participants time to plan ahead for their summer activities.

Participants will be chosen by lottery to work at jobs in hospitals, summer camps, law firms, museums and other sites from July 5 to August 19. Participants will be paid $11 an hour, and may work between 20 and 25 hours a week.

The employer-funded “Ladders for Leadership” internship program provides additional training for workers between 16-and-22-years-old. Those interested in the program must complete a separate, Ladders for Leaders application, DYCD officials said.

Participants in the Summer Youth Employment Program who have their wages direct-deposited to their bank accounts and those who open a savings account are eligible for 2,000 rewards raging from $25 to $500 each. The rewards are offered as part of a national program to increase youth financial literacy.

The 2016 Summer Employment Program placed 60,113 workers at 10,000 job sites, DYCD commissioner Bill Chang said.
