Happy Presidents’ Day
Every third Monday in February, the country observes Presidents’ Day. Originally, we celebrated the birthdays of our 1st and 16th Presidents, George Washington, the Commander-in-Chief who helped us win the American Revolution, and Abraham Lincoln, who led us in the Civil War and saved the union, ending slavery. The holiday has been combined into a celebration of all our presidents, and acknowledges the immense responsibility they shoulder that comes with the awesome powers as president of the world’s leading free nation. Some presidents, like Washington, Lincoln, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt faced down incredible odds and rescued the country. It is never an easy job, and there is no way any president can make everyone happy all the time, not even himself. It takes wise, informed conviction, as well as consideration of the will of the people. In this age of instant communication, it is easier than ever to keep a finger on the pulse of the people and weigh all points of view.
Regardless, we honor all presidents, past and present, and respect the office to which they have ascended by the will of the people, according to our system of government. We join the nation in saluting all our presidents. Whether we agree or disagree, all are presidents of the greatest country in the world, and the best time to honor them and the office is with our upcoming holiday.
If you are off from school or work, enjoy the long weekend – have fun shopping, take in some top-notch entertainment, and have a sumptuous meal. Have a happy Presidents’ Day weekend!
