Call For Hit-Run Driver Alerts

The City Council is considering legislation that would create Amber Alert-type messages to help nab hit-run drivers.

Under the measure introduced by Manhattan councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez, the city would send text and e-mail alerts to the media containing information about vehicles that strike pedestrians and flee the scene.

The information would be posted on highway signs and transmitted to mobile phones and e-mail accounts throughout the metropolitan area in the hopes that someone would spot the vehicle, a law enforcement source said. “If it worked as well as the Amber Alert does, it would be a significant tool for police in their search for hit-run drivers,” the source said.

The alerts would put more eyes and ears on the street to help police catch “the cowardly criminals that kill and seek to escape,” Rodriguez explained.
