Las Margaritas

Start your night off right with a frosty, frozen margarita at Las Margaritas Restaurant and Lounge on Broadway in Astoria. The busy Happy Hour regales from 4-7pm on weeknights and from 6-11 on Saturday and Sunday where specially priced margaritas, beers, and sangrias flow like the good vibes here. Some of the most popular drinks include the passion fruit and coconut margaritas, Brazilian caipirinhas, and minty mojitos, all mixed up fresh. There’s an astounding variety of tequilas, mescal, and rum to choose among, so let the good times begin.

Las Margaritas celebrates ten years on Broadway opened by the gracious husband and wife team of Milton and Ruth Jara. Las Margaritas offers tasty Mexican cuisine, a great Happy Hour, friendly service, and affordable prices, so make this your date night for Valentine’s Day or celebrate Super Bowl Sunday here with plenty of screens to watch the game. The main dining room is decked out in rustic, candle-lit wood tables, soft lighting and Mexican art objects. Just beyond, there’s a festive dining room that can host your customized, private party of up to 50 people, including your own private bar and rest rooms. Call now to reserve your birthday party and ensure a good time for all.

We started with the super fresh, house made guacamole, deliciously chunky and vibrant with color and flavor, served with house made tortilla chips. Quesadillas come warm from the grill, filled with zesty cheese, chicken, beef, or vegetables, with a dollop of sour cream and guacamole ($7.95 and up). If you like it hot, ask for a side of the hot sauce that offers a kick. Nachos are great for sharing, at the bar, or tableside, layered with cheese, chicken, or beef. For a more sophisticated starter, the ceviche is a classic dish of lime-marinated shrimp tossed with chopped red onion, tomato, avocado, jalapeño, and lots of freshly chopped cilantro ($11.95). We loved the coconut shrimp, made here, not frozen, and served with spicy chipotle dipping sauce that was just perfect for the juicy, crunchy shrimp. Crispy fried calamari and spicy Buffalo chicken wings keep everyone happy as they munch, crunch, and sip, or warm up with a bowl of lentil soup with bacon, or classic tortilla soup. Salads topped with grilled chicken or steak also hit the mark at Las Margaritas.

Las Margaritas offers classic Mexican and Southwestern dishes all made fresh on the spot from quality ingredients. Sizzling fajitas are ideal for sharing, served in a cast iron pan with a stack of warm tortillas on the side. Simply fill one with your choice of juicy steak, chicken, shrimp, salmon or vegetables sautéed with fresh peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and onions. Load on some salsa and sour cream and you’ve got a handful of deliciousness. Enchiladas are rolled corn tortillas filled with beef and traditional mole sauce, made with unsweetened coco, raisins, and sesame seeds, or try the enchiladas Suizas with shredded beef, chicken, or cheese and tasty green tomatillo sauce ($13.95). The Combination platter allows you to try a trio of Mexican favorites. The ‘Puebla’ comes with a chile relleno, (stuffed pepper), taco, and burrito, while the ‘Hidalgo’ comes with a burrito, enchilada, and corn tamal for a fine sampling. They are mildly seasoned but can be made hot if you like. The rice and beans that accompany your dish is just great too. Of course, you can stick to tacos filled with steak, shrimp, chicken, or chorizo sausage, or a fat burrito filled with rice, beans, and your favorite meat or vegetables.

Meat lovers enjoy Las Margaritas’ juicy steaks and pork chops, such as the carne asada a la Mexicana where a hefty shell steak is sautéed with onions, tomatoes, and peppers served with a side order or seasoned rice and refried beans ($15.95). Entraña is skirt steak that’s been marinated and grilled to perfection with garlicky chimichurri sauce made of finely chopped parsley, garlic, olive oil and vinegar. Mar y Tierra is Spanish for ‘surf and turf’ where the chef prepares a grilled sirloin steak along with plump, juicy, grilled shrimp, served with mashed potatoes. Thick cut pork chops are grilled and topped with mushrooms and a tasty tequila sauce, or served picante with a bit of spice rubbed into the lean pork, topped with avocado and mango chunks ($16.95).

From the sea comes fresh tilapia Las Margaritas sautéed with shrimps and juicy clams in olive oil and garlic, served over mashed potatoes. Spicy seafood casserole is prepared with lobster tail, clams, mussels, and calamari in Chipotle tomato sauce for a zesty dish. Salmon, simply grilled and pan seared tilapia round out the menu.

Sweeten your palate at the end of this feast with cool and creamy Mexican style flan, tres leches cake made with three types of milk, and the decadent fried ice cream. Pair it up with a Kahlua liqueur and a cup of coffee for the perfect end to this delicious meal.

Las Margaritas is open seven days a week for lunch, dinner, weekend brunch, and a fabulous Happy Hour every night. Stop in for a drink, some appetizers, or a full meal. With fresh, delicious Mexican dishes, great drinks, and friendly service in a warm atmosphere, Las Margaritas Restaurant and Lounge makes every day a fiesta.
