Suicide At Wife’s Gravesite

By Liz Goff
An 83-year-old widower shot himself in the head in front of his wife’s grave at a Middle Village cemetery on January 27.

Cops said Robert Gallo was standing in front of his wife’s black marble headstone at St. John’s Cemetery on Metropolitan Avenue near 80th Street at about 3:o5 p.m. on January 27 when he shot himself with a 22-caliber pistol.

A worker at the cemetery, operated by the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens, heard the gunshot and found Gallo lying next to the grave with the weapon on the ground next to him, police said.

Gallo was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he was treated and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. He died in the unit several hours later, police said.

Workers who rushed to the gravesite recognized Gallo, who paid frequent visits to his wife’s grave, a spokesperson for the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens said.

“We are deeply saddened by what happened and are praying for Mr. Gallo and his family,” the spokesperson said.
