Man Killed By Elmhurst Subway

A man was struck and killed by a subway in Elmhurst on January 27, after he leaned into the path of the oncoming train, police said.

Oops said the unidentified man was apparently intoxicated when he waited with a friend for a train at the Grand Avenue/Newtown station in Elmhurst at about 7:30 p.m. on January 27.

The friend told investigators the victim was leaning over the side of the platform when the train rumbled into the station, police said. The train slammed the victim in the head as a came to s stop, wedging him between the train and the platform, a police source said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The friend said the victim was feeling sick, so he leaned over the platform and didn’t get up fast enough when the train came into the station,” the source said. “He was obviously drunk, slurring his words,” the source said. “He kept saying he didn’t do anything wrong. He was almost crying for his friend.”

The friend was detained for questioning and is not expected to face charges in the crime, police said.

Service on the M and R lines was interrupted for several hours while police conducted an investigation.
