Murder Charge For Baby Strangle Mom

By Liz Goff
The Elmhurst mom who confessed to strangling her 15-month-old daughter earlier this month, was charged with murder on January 17 at a bedside arraignment at Elmhurst Hospital Center.

Prosecutors said Shangbo Xiangshengjie, 33, admitted she killed the baby with a cell phone charging cord on January 3.

Xiangshengjie, who is undergoing court ordered psychiatric evaluation at Elmhurst Hospital, told investigators that she decided to kill the baby and herself, after her brother brought shame to their family in China. Her brother’s actions brought such shame to the family that another brother killed himself, the mom said.

Xiangsherngjie told investigators she decided to kill her daughter, Sanggye Lhakyi, and then take her own life.  The mom strangled the little girl and waited five hours before calling 911, prosecutors said. She then changed her mind about killing herself, prosecutors said.

Police found the baby face down on a twin bed in the home on Elmhurst Avenue. Investigators recovered a bloody phone charging cord on the floor near the bed, a police source said. The baby was declared dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the city Medical Examiner’s office said the baby suffered ligature strangulation and ruled the death a homicide.
