Kim Launches Free Tax Prep With Urban Upbound For 5th Year

Assembly Member Ron Kim (D-Flushing) and Urban Upbound announced that they will be continuing their collaboration in providing free tax services to eligible New Yorkers. For the fifth straight year, Kim’s district office will be hosting volunteers from Urban Upbound’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to provide these vital services for the duration of the tax season.

Kim’s partnership with Urban Upbound’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program helped Flushing residents file over 1,300 tax returns with almost $1.2 million in total tax refund claims. The partnership has also helped put almost $450,000 back into the pockets of working families through the Earned Income Tax Credit. This is real money that makes a difference in a difficult economic climate.

This year, the program will be starting its services on January 24th and ending on April 13th, with the tax season officially ending on April 15th. Appointments will be available Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. On each appointment day there will be multiple IRS certified VITA staff and tax preparers to provide one-onone tax help. Due to high demand, services will be provided strictly by appointment only. Appointments must be made in advance.

Assembly Member Ron Kim stated: “We are proud to once again partner with Urban Upbound in continuing this successful program. By serving as a VITA site, our office is able to provide a crucial and much-needed annual service for free to individuals and working families. The fact that we quickly reach capacity almost every year we have done this is a testament to the program’s popularity. We have already started receiving phone calls for appointments, and I encourage all interested residents to give us a call. We hope to offer these financial services to even more New Yorkers this year, and our volunteers look forward to working with you.”

“We are pleased to offer free tax preparation services for the 5th year in Flushing. Thousands of dollars are being returned to New Yorkers through EITC. This money can make a real difference for folks that are struggling to put food on the table, and help low-income New Yorkers access the benefits they are entitled to,” said Bishop Mitchell G. Taylor, co-founder and CEO of Urban Upbound.

Since its inception in 2005, Urban Upbound has offered a myriad of different community services for city residents. Its mission is to provide public housing neighborhoods with the resources needed to improve economic mobility and self-sufficiency, including: financial counseling, college preparation, and career development services. In renewing its annual partnership with Kim, Urban Upbound is once again demonstrating its commitment to breaking cycles of poverty.
