Whale Tale

By Liz Goff
Port Authority officials found themselves caught up in a fish fight last week, when a dead, 15-foot minke whale washed up on a shoreline of LaGuardia Airport.

Officials alerted the U.S. Coast Guard about the carcass at about 5 p.m. on January 12, after the whale washed up in an area adjacent to LaGuardia runway 13/31, but the agency did not respond because the whale was out of the water, a law enforcement source said.

Officials then called on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries and the Riverhead Marine and Wildlife Conservation for assistance to remove the carcass, the source said. The Riverhead Conservation agreed to assume removal of the remains.

Officials said this was not the same whale that was spotted swimming in the East River on New Year’s Eve.

A Port Authority spokesperson said the incident did not impact operations at LaGuardia Airport.
