Last Respects To Det. McDonald

To The Editor:

Steven McDonald, who passed away the other day, was a remarkable police officer. He was shot 30 years ago, in 1986, and was left paralyzed, and yet forgave his shooter. He remained a member of the NYPD, and dedicated his life promoting peace and love. He truly was the finest of the finest. He spoke at elementary schools, police precincts, mourned with fellow officers at police funerals and attended St. Patrick’s Day parades. He traveled around the world and spoke about hatred, intolerance, and forgiveness. He spoke against violence and yet was a victim of violence. As Cardinal Dolan said of Detective Steven McDonald, “He put aside bitterness, and set an example for us of unity, and reconciliation.” That is so true. My heartfelt prayers go out to his family, friends, fellow police officers, and all the lives he touched and upon which he made a difference.
