Navillus Donates Tech To St. Camillus

Navillus Contracting – a construction company that voluntarily provided extensive emergency restoration services to thousands of Rockaway residents dislocated by Superstorm Sandy in 2012 – has continued to support the community by donating needed technology to a local school.

Students at St. Camillus Catholic Academy in Rockaway Park received the donation at a student assembly held on December 14. The firm gave the school 40 Google Chromebooks, as well as two wireless printers and a stocking full of additional holiday gifts for each student. Also in attendance was New York State Senator Addabbo.

“Those of us in the construction sector need to always remind ourselves that we are engaged in community-building,” said Donal O’Suillivan, owner and President of Navillus Contracting, and a Queens resident as well.  “All of us at Navillus Contracting have been proud to lend a helping hand to the Rockaways, which has sacrificed so much in these four years. We have developed friendships that will outlast our physical presence here and we are hopeful that our gift to the Academy today will continue to help this wonderful community.”

“After the destruction which was caused by Sandy, Navillus was very active in the clean-up and recovery efforts in the Rockaways. Their presence and efforts eased the burdens of so many of us whose lives were shattered by the storm,” said Rev. Richard Ahlemeyer, pastor of St. Camillus-St. Virgilus Roman Catholic Church. “It is a great pleasure to receive this donation and to realize that Navillus continues to support the Rockaway community. God bless them for their generous donation in the past and present.”

“I think it is wonderful that Navillus has continued to give back to the families of Rockaway and Broad Channel.  We are so very grateful for the donation of technology which will enhance our teaching and learning,” said Shelia Smith Gonzalez, Principal of St. Camillus Catholic Academy.  “I know the students of St. Camillus Catholic Academy will be thrilled and surprised by the early Christmas presents.  God bless Mr. O’Sullivan and Navillus Contracting – you made our Christmas wonderful!”

As soon as the scope of the storm’s historic impact became clear, Navillus Contracting – which specializes in concrete high-rise construction – immediately sent in 100 volunteers to undertake emergency cleanup operations. The volunteers literally dug out more than 300 homes in Sandy’s immediate aftermath, mobilizing heavy equipment for emergency cleanup.

A few days later, the firm sent another contingent of 50 corporate volunteers – including hardhats and office personnel alike – to provide additional, hands-on support to affected families. Navillus volunteers established a “relief tent” command center, distributing food and water for up to 4,500 people daily over a three-month period.

As part of its Sandy-related mission, Navillus also provided local families and shopkeepers with health and safety training, which would properly prepare residents to work safely in flood-impacted buildings and homes as rebuilding progressed.

A storm of historic proportions, Superstorm Sandy left a trail of devastation across the entire Eastern Seaboard in 2012, causing more than $75 billion in damage.  Only Katrina, the 2005 mega-storm that leveled New Orleans, caused more destruction.
