Nick’s Bistro

Anytime is the right time for a visit to Nick’s Bistro in Forest Hills. Duck in from the cold and the rush of the holiday season to enjoy a cozy, quiet meal with family or friends. Everything is made from scratch at Nick’s Bistro using the finest vegetables, meat, fish, and seafood. Owners Mario Savvas and Alfred Vitsentzos have run this modern, comfortable bistro with great pride for the last seven years offering great, honest food, excellent service, fair prices, and “A taste of Greece in every bite.” Settleinwithaacreativecocktailmixed on the spot, such as the “Captain Nick” with spiced rum and nutmeg, or a peachy Cosmopolitan. There’s a nice selection of beers too. A glass of Cabernet went well with the house’s famous hummus and tender black eyed peas to be spread upon triangles of warm pita bread. A special appetizer of lamb spring rolls piqued our interest, and gosh, they were so good, accompanied by a somewhat spicy chipotle aioli. There were two rolls cut in half, making this a great appetizer for sharing. Also to share are Nick’s famous crab cakes, full of sweet crabmeat and crispy breading, served with remoulade sauce ($12) or a platter of light, crispy, fried calamari or Portobello mushrooms, stuffed with crabmeat and béchamel sauce. Keftedes are Cypriot style meatballs, scented with spices and cinnamon, and the falafel is also handmade here and served with tahini and yogurt sauce.

Nick’s Bistro does fish and seafood in a big way, such as whole, charcoal grilled branzino, tilapia filet, wild salmon with white wine, garlic and butter sauce, and filet of sole or red snapper filet prepared with or without crabmeat stuffing. Even classic fish and chips are great here.

My happy companion devoured a juicy lamb kebab, laced with marinated chunks of lamb, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. There’s also pork, chicken, or tender filet mignon kebabs, served with your choice of rice, fries or their delicious lemon potatoes. The Colorado lamb chops simply melt in your mouth, as does the ribeye steak and apricot glazed pork chops that were featured that evening. Turning to Greek specialties, Nick’s Bistro makes moussaka like nowhere else. Distinct layers of potato and seasoned ground meat rest below sliced zucchini and eggplant under a cloud-like layer of light, fluffy béchamel. I tried the pastitsio this time, a mammoth sized portion of Greek pasta, seasoned ground beef, and a layer of that heavenly béchamel. I dare you to finish it in one sitting, but it does make a great lunch or dinner the next day.

Nick’s Bistro is a great place for lunch with its wide variety of hot pressed sandwiches made with grilled chicken, grilled veggies, falafel, filet mignon, Ahi tuna, or the Cuban sandwich, made with pork loin, Swiss cheese and pickle. Burgers are made to order, served hot and juicy, and are made from the best quality beef, including Kobe beef, Quinoa veggie burgers, crab cake, or turkey burgers. I love the beet salad with arugula and goat cheese or the fresh Ahi tuna over sliced avocado, mixed greens, and cucumber with sesame vinaigrette dressing.

Save room for desserts which include baklava, Mama’s Greek cookies, flourless chocolate cake, Greek style cannoli filled with cheesecake, and delicious coffee or cordials. The Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays offers Eggs Benedict or Eggs Norwegian with smoked salmon, ham steak and eggs, steak and eggs, chocolate chip or blueberry pancakes, brioche bread French toast and a list of sandwiches to start your weekend off right.
