The room at the GAHOA headquarters was filled with the scent of delicious food and the joyous revelry of the holiday. GAHOA President George Alexiou, honorary President and Chairman of the Thanksgiving Day Dinner, said that more than 550 turkeys were delivered to needy families and 114 turkeys were prepared and served at the headquarters at 23-49 31st Street, where 150 volunteers served more than 2,500 persons. Everything was donated from local markets and restaurants. Guests dined on turkey, sweet potato, dessert, spinach and cheese pie and wine, Alexiou said. Volunteers also packed up boxes containing hundreds of meals, which were brought to families unable to come in person. The GAHOA has been preparing this annual tradition for 27 years. New York’s Finest were also on hand this year to help dish out the meal. Members of the 114th Precinct Neighborhood Policing Team joined other volunteers at the event. Also present at the event was Archbishop Dimitrios of America, Councilman Costa Constantinides, Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas, state Senator Mike Gianaris and the General Counsel of Greece. GAHOA member George Fakiris was honored for his great philanthropy shown each year for this annual event.
