Cops Hunt Suspects In Local Hate Crime

By Liz Goff

Police are searching for a group of men who attacked and shouted anti-Muslim remarks at a local teenager on November 19.
Police said the 17-year-old was sitting on a bench at Crescent Street and 41st Avenue at about 7 pm on November 19, when he was approached by three men, one who shouted, “I don’t want any Muslims f---ing sitting on my bench.” One of the men then hit the teen in the face with a bottle. The teen was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was treated for a fractured eye socket, lacerations and bruising.
The attackers, described as white males, fled in an unknown direction following the assault.
The attack came less than a week after the city’s five district attorneys vowed to vigorously prosecute hate crimes that are on the rise throughout the five boroughs – and just hours after Gov. Mario Cuomo announced a plan to establish a State Police unit to investigate bias crimes.
