Give Thanks & Reflect

Peralta, Woodside On Move Distribute 1,000+ Turkeys

For the 6th annual Turkey Drive, state Senator Jose Peralta, in cooperation with Woodside on the Move and several co-sponsors, donated more than 1,000 turkeys – twice that of last year’s drive – to community and faith-based organizations, senior and day care centers and schools in time for Thanksgiving Day. State Senator Jose Peralta, in cooperation with Woodside on the Move and several cosponsors, donated more than 1,000 turkeys to community and faith-based organizations, senior and day care centers and schools in time for Thanksgiving Day. The sixth annual Turkey Drive will provide a meal to families in need living in the Senator’s district.

On November 15, some of the 10-14 pound turkeys were distributed in the Senator’s office, and the rest were picked up at various establishments across the district, including Food Universe, Food Bazaar and Foodtown. Other co-sponsors were Foodtown, PLS, Fidelis Care, the York Group, Affinity and the Ferrari Driving School.

“This is a time to give thanks and reflect. We organized this turkey drive with the intention of giving back to the community, to help those who are struggling. Many hard-working families are going through some real tough economic times, and providing them a free turkey will allow them to enjoy a decent holiday meal,” said Senator Peralta.

For this year’s drive, Sen. Peralta and the collaborating partners more than doubled the amount of turkeys donated to the Turkey Drive 2015. “Last year we distributed a little more than 500 turkeys, so I am extremely proud this year we surpassed the 1,000-turkey mark. I am thankful to all our partners for making this happen. I also want to thank my friends and colleagues, Member of Congress Joseph Crowley, and Assemblymembers Aravella Simotas, Francisco Moya and Michael DenDekker for their involvement in this drive to help the less fortunate.”

Peralta noted that the number of organizations participating in the initiative was also greater than last year’s. During this Turkey Drive, a total of 16 organizations donated to the drive, compared to 11 in 2015. “I am glad more and more organizations are stepping up to the plate to help New Yorkers, especially in these tough times.”

“I’m always delighted to partner with State Senator Jose Peralta and Woodside on the Move this time of year to help provide a Thanksgiving Day meal to New Yorkers in need,” said Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx). “I’m grateful to all of the co-sponsors for their roles in making this wonderful effort possible. It’s great to see our community come together in the spirit of giving back to make sure everyone can share in the Thanksgiving tradition!”

Assembly Member Michael DenDekker (D-East Elmhurst) said, “I am proud and excited to once again host this Turkey Drive with Senator Peralta and Woodside on the Move. Thanksgiving is a day when we as Americans come together with loved ones to celebrate and reflect upon the things for which we are grateful – no family should have to miss out on this tradition because they cannot afford a Thanksgiving meal. By distributing these turkeys throughout the community, Woodside on the Move, Senator Peralta and I hope that we can help more families enjoy stress-free and fulfilling Thanksgiving.”

“I’m proud to join my friend Senator Peralta in helping place meals on the tables of families less fortunate this holiday season. Falling on hard times means making tough sacrifices, and Thanksgiving is no exception. Thankfully, the organizations who have partnered with us do an incredible job making sure that each donated turkeys find its way to those who could benefit the most so they don’t miss out on the yearly tradition. I’m grateful to everyone who made this drive possible and lent their hand in making this holiday season brighter for their neighbors,” said Assembly Member Francisco P. Moya.

Assembly Member Aravella Simotas noted, “Giving Thanksgiving turkeys to families in need is not just about food, it is also way to reach out and share the holiday with fellow New Yorkers. This is a way to help families come together around a warm and festive meal that satisfies our universal need for companionship and love.”

“For so many Queens families, the holidays are a difficult time because money is tight. Woodside on the Move is proud to support the annual Turkey Drive and help bring meals and joy to those in need,” said Executive Director of Woodside on the Move, Amy Paul.

“We’re so happy to have the opportunity to participate in a wonderful event like this Turkey Drive,” says Dean Janeway, Chief Executive Officer of Key Food/Food Universe, supermarket chain that donated 400 turkeys for the Senator’s drive. “Here at Key Food, we always strive to get involved in our communities, especially when it comes to helping families during the holiday season.”

“We are proud to support Senator Peralta and Woodside on the Move to help get healthy and delicious turkeys into the homes of families this Thanksgiving,” said Spencer An, President of Food Bazaar Supermarkets, which donated 120 turkeys. “We are committed to the communities that we are in, and enjoy working with its leaders to create initiatives that benefit families. We are proud to be a part of this turkey drive.”

“PLS is committed to assisting organizations that help families,” stated PLS spokesperson Matt Swentkofske. “Woodside on the Move’s approach is making a tremendous difference in Western Queens. Support requires more than just accolades; it requires a financial commitment from businesses located in the neighborhood, and PLS was glad to contribute again to its Turkey Drive.”

“Fidelis Care is proud to partner with Senator Peralta and Woodside on the Move for the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive,” said Chief Marketing Officer of Fidelis Care Pamela Hassen. “Helping families celebrate the holiday with a nutritious meal is part of our continued commitment to the community.”

“This voucher giveaway is very much in line with the Affinity Health Plan mission of serving families in need” said Affinity’s Interim CEO Jim Hooley. “Affinity Health Plan is proud to partner with Senator Jose Peralta to provide grocery vouchers to New York City families. Giving back takes on a special meaning this time of year, as families gather around the dinner table to celebrate Thanksgiving. Through this small gesture, Affinity and Senator Peralta’s office come together to help ensure that families are able to have a warm meal this holiday.”
