Martha’s Country Bakery

Follow your nose to Martha’s Country Bakery with four locations in Astoria, Bayside, Forest Hills, and the new outpost in Williamsburg. There’s always something brewing at the coffee bar and the aromas emanating from the kitchen are intoxicating. Martha’s Country Bakery makes fabulous cakes, cupcakes, pastries, pies, muffins, macarons, and coffee drinks of all kinds, served in a cool environment. The décor is both rustic and modern featuring wood beam ceilings and plank floors. Chat with friends, read, or surf the net while you enjoy the serenity of this heartwarming bakery and meeting spot.

The Ditmars Blvd location has plenty of outdoor seating and on a recent, unusually warm November evening, nearly all the tables were full with people sipping on coffee and tea, and indulging in some of Martha’s famous treats while enjoying the Fall evening.

Thanksgiving is here and the staff at Martha’s is accepting orders for pies to pick up for Turkey Day. Only fresh fruit is used for their pies and the crust is light and delicate. With varieties including pumpkin, apple and sour cream, apple crumb, triple berry, pecan, and my favorite, cherry pie, your hosts or guests will be wow-ed.

The Stertsios family has been baking since 1972, starting with Peter, and the tradition continues with son George, and partner Tony Zannikos. These pros use real butter, vanilla, chocolate, and fresh fruit in their decadent creations. You can taste it in every delicious bite of their cakes, 18 varieties of cupcakes, pies, macarons and puddings. Barbara, the friendly, helpful manager recommended some of her favorites, such as the triple chocolate mousse cake, and the cheesecake bars. Try a Nutella cheesecake bar, salted caramel, key lime, or nutty apple cheesecake bar.

My friend just loved the triple chocolate mousse cake as well as “ekmek” a Greek pastry with egg custard and whipped cream. The baklava and galaktoboureko are other fine Greek pastries made with pride. If you crave something savory, try the flaky Greek spinach pie or cheese pie made with flaky phyllo pastry. One of my all-time favorites is Martha’s banana-chocolate chip bread pudding, served warm with whipped cream. There’s even chocolate bread pudding for the chocoholic.

The glistening cases boast Martha’s Country Bakery cakes which are almost too pretty to eat. They are many layers high, full of flavor and quality ingredients, and not overly sweet. Raspberry layer cake features chocolate cake layers slathered with raspberry mousse, topped with whipped cream while lemon coconut cake looks lighter than air. Take home a moist carrot cake, red velvet cake and strawberry banana cake, with real cream. Tiramisu cake is light and fluffy, and the Oreo mousse is a popular number.

Martha’s Country Bakery has a weekly special that pairs up one of their delicious baked treats with a scoop of gelato and a coffee drink. The gelato is great on its own too, with flavors that include Nutella banana, coffee, and chocolate chip. Coffee drinks are made with high quality beans and served hot or cold. Hot chocolate is made the traditional way, with real, melted down Ghirardelli chocolate and milk. There’s pumpkin hot chocolate too and a variety of teas to warm you up. Start your morning with one of these hot drinks and a flaky croissant, muffin or sweet roll. Muffin flavors include blueberry banana, bran, cappuccino, cranberry, carrot, chocolate chip and more. Dunk a cinnamon stick pastry or a piece of their famous yogurt pound cake into the magical brew. Tender scones laced with pecans or raisins dunk right into your hot coffee for the perfect start to your day, to stay or to go.
